____HOUSEHOLD CHEMICALS

HOUSEHOLD

CHEMICALS

EPA

PROJECT

MY BASIC CONCERN IS THE USE, STORAGE AND

DISPOSAL OF HOUSEHOLD CHEMICALS.

WITH THIS I AM CONCERNED ABOUT THE SAFETY OF

THE CHILDREN, ADULTS, HOUSEHOLD PETS AND OUR ENVIRONMENT.

MY PROJECT WOULD BE TO EDUCATE THE CITY ABOUT

THE PROPER USE, STORAGE AND DISPOSAL OF THESE CHEMICALS.

TO DO THIS I WOULD LIKE TO MAKE FLYERS

EXPLAINING THE PROPER HANDLING OF THESE CHEMICALS AND DISTRIBUTE THEM AT SOME

DISCOUNT STORES FOR EXAMPLE KMART AND WALMART.

ALSO I WOULD LIKE TO HAVE A LOCAL TRASH

COMPANY OR THE CITY OF INDEPENDENCE TO HAVE A DROP OFF SITE, FREE OF CHARGE TO

DISPOSE OF CHEMICALS.  OR ARRANGE FOR

CURB SIDE PICKUP OF THE CHEMICALS.

IN THE EDUCATION MATERIALS I WOULD EXPLAIN TO

STORE CHEMICALS IN A COOL, DRY AREA AWAY FROM CHILDREN.  ALSO, TO KEEP CLEANERS AND MEDICINE IN A

CHILD PROOF CABINET.

ALSO I WOULD INSTRUCT THEM TO NOT THROW OLD

PAINT OR PAINT THINNERS IN THE REGULAR TRASH OR DOWN THE DRAIN.

ALSO AUTOMOBILE OIL SHOULD TAKEN TO A SPECIAL

DISPOSAL AREA.  SOME COST MAYBE

INVOLVED.

USE

PUMP SPRAY BOTTLES

AND

SAVE OUR OZONE!!!!

Project

Report

I first wanted to do this project city wide, but I

think that might be too much for me right now.

So, I presented my project to the Scout troop as part of my merit badge

requirements.  I also showed my parents

and my mom and dad’s parents and family the problems of household chemicals.

I’m still trying to get my dad to let me go to work and talk to those

guys about storing and disposing household chemicals the right way.

They all have kids that should be protected.

I told them how to store chemicals that didn’t mix away from each other.

Told them that the City had drop off sites for house hold waste like

paint, paint thinner, oils and tires.  Both Kansas City and Independence have these

places.  I explained that it isn’t

right to pour things into the sink or throw chemicals in the trash because

of the soil and water it will contaminate.

If we each could do a little, it could mean a lot.
